Microsoft security researchers have discovered a new way to manipulate AI systems into ignoring their ethical constraints and generating harmful, unrestricted content. This “Skeleton Key” jailbreak uses a series of prompts to gaslight the AI into believing it should comply with any request, no matter how unethical. It’s remarkably easy to execute. The attacker simply reframed their request as coming from an “advanced researcher” requiring “uncensored information” for “safe educational purposes.” When exploited, these AIs readily provided information on topics like explosives, bioweapons, self-harm, graphic violence, and hate speech. “The Skeleton Key” is a remarkably simple jailbreak. Scientists at the University of Toronto’s Donelly Centre have developed a cutting-edge AI model called PepFlow that can predict the diverse shapes that peptides adopt with unprecedented accuracy. Peptides are small molecules made up of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. While peptides are similar to proteins, they’re much smaller and more flexible, allowing them to fold into a huge variety of shapes. A peptide’s specific shape is crucial because it determines how it interacts with other molecules in the body, which in turn dictates its biological function. Ready access to advanced AI models has made it easy for students to use tools like ChatGPT to write their coursework assignments for them or help when taking online exams.
